IS YOUR DOCTOR USING AI?
You may have noticed that your doctor is now taking notes during your appointment by using what is called an A.I. scribe. This is a device provided by an A.I. scribe company. These devices create a transcript draft of your appointment that is temporarily stored with the A.I. company your doctor uses. These drafts are reported to be deleted within a few weeks or months. Using the A.I. scribe is said to encourage doctors to pay closer attention to you during the visits and to save doctors from spending many hours on paperwork documenting patient care. In Pennsylvania, recording someone requires the consent of all parties involved in the conversation so your doctor is supposed to ask your permission to use the A.I. scribe. You have the right to access your medical records and see all of your doctor’s notes so that way you can know what is being stored in your electronic file. Should the use of an A.I. scribe raise concerns about your privacy, the A.I. companies are said to be bound by HIPAA federal health privacy laws plus you can always decline to give your consent to the use of the scribe during your appointment.
