Know Your Credit Reporting Rights

As individuals, having good credit is very important in being able to secure things you want in life. Though you do not have much control over what is initially reported on your credit report, here are certain rights that you have to protect you from harm to your creditworthiness:

  • You must be notified if a credit report has been used against you
  • You can get a copy of your credit report for free from Experian, Equifax and Trans Union, each, every 12 months at annualcreditreport.com
  • You have the right to get your credit score from the credit reporting agencies but this may or may not be free
  • You have the right to dispute errors on your credit report by sending dispute letters (by certified mail) to any credit reporting agency
  • Employers must have your written permission to pull your credit report
  • Errors on your credit report must be corrected or deleted
  • After 7 years, negative information on your credit report has to be removed (after 10 years for bankruptcies)
  • You may  have the right to sue a credit reporting agency that violates the Fair Credit Reporting Act

Call Pine Street Legal for more information and to help you assert your rights at (215) 345-9214.
